To make the best decisions and act differently with confidence, we must shift how we see ourselves and our dilemmas in the context of a desired future. But we can’t do this on our own, as our brains are triggered to resist what feels uncomfortable. We all get stuck in our automatic thought-processing and fool ourselves into thinking we are acting consciously and willfully. In this session, learn how Coaching acts as an external thought disruptor to help people arrive at effective and sustainable change by disrupting the brain’s operating system, allowing them to decide how best to move forward right now. We will look at the essential elements of skillfully coaching thinking patterns and behaviors and how to use reflective inquiry techniques to shift perspective.

The greatest journey of our life has an unknown destination. It is not a journey we will take to a place in the world (although it may include it), but to the greatest of worlds, which is our own being… an inner journey that allows us to step out of the demands and needs of our society and culture, to really understand our “why” and “what for” in life. It is a journey that will connect us with our purpose as leaders beyond what the world has made us believe, moving from the “should be” to the “I want to”. This is the journey we invite you to in this session. A journey into the unknown and without a travel agenda or itinerary, requiring courage and the ability to truly recognize ourselves.

Courageous Conversations With Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener

Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener is a researcher, coach, and consultant who focuses on positive topics such as courage, wellbeing, hospitality, and communication. He is especially interested in how cultural influences affect these topics. Robert has consulted with companies in dozens of nations including Standard Chartered Bank, Australia Department of Defense, Unilever, Free Balance, Deloitte, and many others. He also loves coaching high-potential mid-level leaders. He is the author of the coaching book Positive Provocation, the New York Times Best-Selling The Upside of Your Dark Side, and the Prose Award-winning Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth. He lives in Portland, Oregon.

Managers, coaches, and educators are all familiar with tough conversations. They often involve delivering critical feedback or addressing sensitive problems. All too often, these exchanges are worrisome for the deliverer of the feedback and difficult for the receiver. As a result, these conversations tend to erode wellbeing, take more time than they need to, and are not always effective. In this presentation, Dr. Robert Biswas-Diener will shift the focus of tough conversations away from solving problems or focusing on performance and, instead, focus on the psychological aspects of these exchanges. Specifically, he will discuss the science of courage and how it might be used to bolster leaders in addressing difficult scenarios. On the other side of the conversation, he will focus on ways to create psychological safety so that feedback can be received and used more effectively.

Teams are the backbone of business and organizations. Companies can successfully navigate today’s ever-changing business environment when teams are innovative, resilient, agile, adaptable and flexible. But this can happen only when team members are genuinely connected and work together in synergy to accomplish a common goal. Achieving team synergy, however, is a challenging task. When do team members normally get stuck? It is when they avoid situations where they have incompatible interests, goals, principles, opinions or feelings, also referred to as CONFLICT. This highly interactive session will explore how team coaching can make teams see conflict as a breakthrough point for synergy. It explores how coaching can help team members behave constructively in a conflict situation so they can deliberately work towards creating healthy and productive ideas and solutions.
