“NOT YOUR MOM’S BOSS”

Leadership in 2022 is more complex than rocket science. We’ve been through a global pandemic, massive shifts in corporate strategy, remote work, now hybrid work. We’re dealing with the Great Resignation, Quiet Quitting, struggles with mental health and well-being, and Gen Z entering the workplace. The message is clear: to be a leader today, you need to be flexible, resilient, people-centered, attuned with the times, and basically ready for anything. Nothing could be farther from the typical boss in the 1980s, whose main operating system was command and control.

But while a whole new breed of leader is absolutely necessary, let’s not forget that certain leadership principles will always ring true regardless of the season. It is still, and will always be, a balance of strategy, execution, and people development — it is simply how you get things done that changes. It is about knowing how to delegate well, how to manage and optimize performance, how to give feedback, plan for the future, make sound decisions, get things done, and ask for support.

So to all of you who hold both the privilege and responsibility of being called a leader today, with all the complexities that it holds, we salute you.
